Mainz’s search for a striker to fill the void in attack due to injuries of key players has ended. Nigeria U-23 international Taiwo Awoniyi joins Mainz from Liverpool on a year loan.

The authorities were forced to act because reliable strikers in Mainz like Jean-Philippe Mateta is sidelined with a meniscus injury and new signing from Augsburg, Dong-Won Ji has cartilage damage.

Awoniyi has experience of German football from his stint with FSV Frankfurt in the second division in 2015/2016. He has been a perennial player on loan since he signed for Liverpool. His last port of call was the Belgian league.

He played for Gent before heading to Royal Mouscron scoring 14 goals in 38 games and three assists.

Coach of Mainz, Sandro Schwarz, rates Awoniyi as capable and prepared for the season.

“Taiwo Awoniyi radiates immense danger in attack with his physical force and deep runs. He has a top mentality and ready for the Bundesliga challenge.”

Awoniyi is happy to be in Mainz and looking forward to a splendid time.

“The discussions with the persons in charge was very good, and I was warmly received by all. The Bundesliga is one of Europe’s top leagues, and I am grateful to prove myself.”

I hope that Awoniyi settles quickly and stamp his authority on the pitch.

The loan fee was not disclosed, but I speculate it to be around 500,000€.

Awoniyi trains with the team today.
