Anthony Ujah is acquainted with the Bundesliga after spells in Mainz, Cologne, Bremen and now Union Berlin. He is not a new kid on the block.

Ujah’s experience will be important for Union Berlin as they play in the Bundesliga for the first time this season. The fact is not lost on him when he spoke to Bundesligavibes after 1-1 with Augsburg on matchday 2.

„It is going to be a long and hard season, but we will give everything we have.“ He said.

Ujah downplayed the perceived rivalry with his fellow teammate Sebastian Andersson.

“Last game he started and in this game, I got the chance to start. For us, it’s not about the individual fight. We came here together as one team.”

“He scored today even though I started and I was very happy for him and we celebrated together.“

„Union Berlin has one point, not Ujah has one point or Andersson one point. We come together as one family and we are going back as one family.“

Union Berlin needs to translate the family atmosphere into more cohesion and team play. They could be forgiven as newcomers in the Bundesliga for being naïve and timid sometimes. But not for long.

Ujah was remarkably prescient about the meaning of the draw in Augsburg.

„This point is very vital to us. In the next ten games, we’ll look back and see how this point is.“

Andersson makes history for Union Berlin as the first player to score in the Bundesliga. I hope the team will survive the rigours of first division football.
